March 2020 will forever remain etched in our memories for years to come. The whole country came to a virtual standstill as we were placed under lock down. Life as we knew it had be turned upside down and we were forced to adjust to what was to be called the new normal. The Lockdown was a major threat to people’s livelihoods and with the job losses that ensued people had to find a way to make ends meet.

During lockdown Thulani Silence Nkuna, lost his job but, optimism played an important role in influencing his response to the unfortunate event. Thulani chose to see the opportunities that existed in the midst of the crisis. It was after losing his job, that he started Glass boys. The Pretoria based company is into recycling and manufacturing of glass products. They collect empty bottles and make products such as drinking glasses, wind chimes, globe holders, candle holders and flower vases just to mention a few.

Some of the challenges faced by the business is lack of suitable space to operate from and limited storage space for the bottles and this adversely affects production. True to his optimistic nature, Thulani sees a bright future with great growth prospects for the company.

In spite of the above-mentioned challenges the decision taken by the creative entrepreneur has made it possible for him to help other individuals make income on a part time basis. The company is also embarking on a skills transfer program and this will create a platform for other individuals to launch their own businesses.
